boy clothing history

origin of the association of colors with sex?
We all know, typically blue is the color of boys and pink of girls.
But this has some interesting history, is something like – it was thought that something/someone evil would come and take a child, so the babies were dressed as blue for boy and pink for girl.
An interesting part of the history is that during the night the baby clothes were switched so that if they had to lose a baby it was preferred to be a girl
Does anyone know the complete/correct story?
I am not sure but I was told that this idea was a holdover from the mannerist and evolved from Thomas Gainsborough’s Blue Boy, and thus pink satin was a natural counterpoint, and a common choice for young girls in court dresses in France and England.

Clothing: A Global History $18.22 In virtually all the countries of the world, men, and to a lesser extent women, are today dressed in very similar clothing. This book gives a compelling account and analysis of the process by which this has come about. At the same time it takes seriously those places where, for whatever reason, this process has not occurred, or has been reversed, and provides explanations for these developments.

The first part of this story recounts how the cultural, political and economic power of Europe and, from the later nineteenth century North America, has provided an impetus for the adoption of whatever was at that time standard Western dress. Set against this, Robert Ross shows how the adoption of European style dress, or its rejection, has always been a political act, performed most frequently in order to claim equality with colonial masters, more often a male option, or to stress distinction from them, which women, perhaps under male duress, more frequently did.

The book takes a refreshing global perspective to its subject, with all continents and many countries being discussed. It investigates not merely the symbolic and message-bearing aspects of clothing, but also practical matters of production and, equally importantly, distribution.1. Introduction.
2. Emily Dickinson and the Labor of Clothing $25.2 Daneen Wardrop’s Emily Dickinson and the Labor of Clothing begins by identifying and using the dating tools of fashion to place the references to clothing in Dickinson’s letters and poems, and to locate her social standing through examining her fashion choices in the iconic daguerreotype. In addition to detailing the poetics of fashion in Dickinson’s work, the author argues that close examination of Dickinson and fashion cannot be separated from the changing ways that garments were produced during the nineteenth century, embracing issues of domestic labor, the Lowell textile mills, and the Amherst industry of the Hills Hat Factory located almost next door to Dickinson’s Homestead. The recent retrieval of clothing from approximately thirty trunks found in the attic of the Evergreens house, which formerly belonged to Dickinson’s brother and sister-in-law, further enhances this remarkable and original interdisciplinary work.A history of nineteenth-century fashion through the works of Emily Dickinson |

Fashion for the People: A History of Clothing at Marks & Spencer $97.79 DIVDIVMarks & Spencer is an institution synonymous with quality, reliability, and customer care. But do we associate it with “fashion”? Drawing on previously unpublished company archives,IFashion for the People/Iconsiders the company’s contribution to British–and, since the 1970s, international–fashion. The author discusses how, from the 1920s, Marks & Spencer brought fashion to the high street, offering well-designed clothing at affordable prices. She examines the unique ways in which the company has democratized fashion, arguing that its pioneering role in the development of new fabrics, the employment of designers as consultants and its marketing and promotional strategies have changed the ways in which we understand and consume fashion. Clothing and Difference – P $9.44 This volume examines the dynamic relationship between the body, clothing and identity in sub-Saharan Africa and raises questions that have previously been directed almost exclusively to a Western and urban context. Unusual in its treatment of the body surface as a critical frontier in the production and authentification of identity. Clothing and Difference shows how the body and its adornment have been used to construct and contest social and individual identities in Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Kenya, and other African societies during both colonial and post-colonial times. This is a most thought-provoking and entertaining collection, which should challenge many traditional Africanists to think about the meaning of hitherto unconsidered aspects of cultural representation in African societies.br–Alan G. Fashioning the Bourgeoisie: A History of Clothing in the Nineteenth Ce $7.73 Philippe Perrot shows, through a delightful tour of the rise of the ready-made fashion industry in France, how clothing can not only reflect but also inculcate beliefs, values, and aspirations. Richly detailed, entertaining, and provocative, this book reveals to us the sources of many of our contemporary rules of fashion and etiquette. When department stores like Le Bon Marche first opened their doors in mid-nineteenth-century Paris, shoppers were offered more than racks of ready-made frock coats and crinolines. They were given the chance to acquire a life-style as well – that of the bourgeoisie. Wearing proper clothing encouraged proper behavior, went the prevailing belief. Available now for the first time in English, Fashioning the Bourgeoisie was one of the first extensive studies to explain a culture’s sociology through the seemingly simple issue of the choice of clothing. Philippe Perrot shows, through a delightful tour of the rise of the ready-made fashion industry in France, how clothing can not only reflect but also inculcate beliefs, values, and aspirations. By the middle of the century, men were prompted to disdain the decadent and gaudy colors of the pre-Revolutionary period and wear unrelievedly black frock coats suitable to the manly and serious world of commerce. Their wives and daughters, on the other hand, adorned themselves in bright colors and often uncomfortable and impractical laces and petticoats, to signal the status of their family. The consumer pastime of shopping was born, as women spent their spare hours keeping up their middle-class appearance, or creating one by judicious purchases. As Paris became the fashion capital and bourgeois modes of dress and their inherent attitudes became the ruling life-style of western Europe and America, clothing and its civilizing tendencies were imported to non-Western colonies as well. In the face of what Perrot calls this leveling process, the upper classes tried to maintain their stature and right to@ë…¸Qìÿ¾Úx |

Textiles and Clothing, C.1150-C.1450 $24.21 Among the most evocative items to be discovered by archaeologists are the scraps of silk and wool and other fabrics that signal so eloquently their owner’s status and concerns. Such clothing and textile finds have figured prominently in excavations of medieval sites in London in the past two decades; they have included knitting, tapestries, silk hair-nets and elaborately patterned oriental, Islamic and Italian fabrics, which reveal for the first time the wide range of cloths available to medieval Londoners; there are beautifully made buttons, and buttonholes and edgings which display superb craftsmanship and a high level of needlework skills; the way that clothes were cut and sewn can be studied in detail. This highly readable account will be of wide general interest; dress historians and archaeologists will also find a wealth of new insights into the fashions, clothing and textile industries of medieval England and Europe. Contents include: The Excavations, Techniques used in Textile Production, Wool Textiles, Goathair Textiles, Linen Textiles, Silk Textiles, Mixed Cloths, Narrow Wares, Sewing Techniques and Tailoring, Dyes. THE AUTHORS Past and present staff of the Museum of London.A model of clarity… It provides absolutely essential reference material for the dress historian and archaeologist, for the early textile specialist, and those interested in the tools and equipment used.
